In upstate New York, we see many Ruby-throated Hummingbirds during the summer - particularly at our Hummingbird Feeder. As I watch them, it is amazing how many times one bird challenges another. I have read that the male is very territorial and does not like to share space with another.
While we often smile at their antics, I cannot help but think that we humans are really quite similar as a species. How difficult we find living together in the same space. How often we focus on our differences instead of our similarities. How often we fly at each other in irritation rather than reacting with kindness. Perhaps we are not so different than the Hummingbird.
In this painting, one Hummingbird attempts to enter the space occupied by the other. The Hummingbird perched on the branch is clearly not happy. It represents The Challenge for us all. Can we learn to share our space without strife?

I love being outdoors and seeing the beauty of nature during all seasons. I love color and the great way you feel when colors come together in just the right way. This is the inspiration for my painting and most of my work depicts scenes from nature. I believe in lifelong learning and love the painting process where you never stop learning and discovering new things. I hope you enjoy my paintings!
