Description

High in the mountains is a Gate that leads to Winter. It is difficult to find and known only to those few who survive on their own in the wild.

The Grey Wolf thrives in winter conditions. In the Autumn, he begins to grow a second layer of short underfur covered by dense outer fur to prepare for living in the cold.

On a warm Autumn day, this Grey Wolf crosses through the Winter Gate, seeking the comfort of cooler temperatures and the diversion of the snow.

An open gate is a common symbol that represents transitions between old and new, past and future. The Torii Gate represents a portal between the physical and spiritual worlds and is said to protect those around it from evil spirits. Wolves symbolize courage and strength and are sometimes described as teachers or spiritual guides. Perhaps the wolf in this painting is reminding us to have courage when transitioning to new experiences.

The idea for this painting was developed by my grandson Magnus and was painted for him.
