The Black Swallowtail is such a beautiful butterfly - particularly the female who displays a large area of powdery, iridescent blue at the edge of her rear wings. It is surprising to me that Swallowtails can be found in multiple colors. While the black variety is common in Eastern North America, I see many more yellow Swallowtails. They are usually found in open fields or marsh areas and I love seeing both varieties - but it makes my day to spot a Black Swallowtail!
This was painted for a friend who also admires this beautiful butterfly.

I love being outdoors and seeing the beauty of nature during all seasons. I love color and the great way you feel when colors come together in just the right way. This is the inspiration for my painting and most of my work depicts scenes from nature.
